Vermont Wild Author Returns to Bartleby's - With Local Hero Wayne Rowell!

11/17/2012 1:00 pm
11/17/2012 3:00 pm
Two adventures from retired Vermont Fish and Game Warden Wayne Rowell are featured in the new book, "Vermont Wild, Adventures of Fish & Game Wardens, Volume 3," to be unveiled at Bartleby's Books, Saturday, November 17th from 1 to 3 pm.  Rowell worked 32 years as a Vermont warden and lives on East Main Street in Wilmington with his wife, Genevieve, known to many for her years working in the Wilmington Post Office.

Written by award-winning former journalist, Megan Price, "Vermont Wild" Volumes One and Two rocketed to the top of many Green Mountain bookstores' best seller list in both 2011 and 2012.   The book series features true, funny warden encounters with wily poachers, hungry bears, amorous moose and hard-headed hunting dogs.  Read and enjoyed by all ages, each story is illustrated and written to make the reader feel a warden is with them, telling the story around a campfire. The books are published in paperback with water resistant covers. They are designed to be stuffed into a backpack and read in a tree stand or read out loud at hunting camp.  Women and men, children and adults all love the adventures.

Hot off the press, "Vermont Wild" Volume Three is chock full or more great stories, including a cougar attack, jinxed snowmobile, monkeys with guns and two stories from retiree Rowell in which he had to outsmart some clever beavers from Woodford and Halifax to relocate them.  Volume Three contains 302 pages and 22 stories from nine wardens.  The cover features a wide-eyed warden trying to stop a bolting cougar by grabbing its tail.

Price and Rowell will visit Bartleby's Books at 17 West Main Street, from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday to sign books for customers and share some "stories behind the stories" from the "Vermont Wild" series.  All three volumes will be available to Bartleby's customers. This is the author's only appearance in southern Vermont in 2012.  To reserve your books, or to obtain more information about the event, call Bartleby's 464-5425 or email  bartbook@sover.net

Flood Relief Fundraiser - Yvonne Daley Shares A MIGHTY STORM: STORIES OF RESILIENCE AFTER IRENE

08/28/2012 5:00 pm

Yvonne DaleyOn Tuesday, August 28th at 5:00pm Bartleby's commemorates the one year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene with a fundraiser.  Author Yvonne Daley, will  share her new book, A MIGHTY STORM, STORIES OF RESILIENCE AFTER IRENE, with all procedes being donated to flood relief funds.

In the fall of 2011, Vermont journalist Yvonne Daley wrote and edited A Mighty Storm: Stories of Resilience After Irene, a collection of stories and photographs about Tropical Storm Irene’s path of destruction throughout Vermont. To compile stories first-hand, Daley hiked into many communities made islands from flooding and spent time with homeowners who had lost their homes and captured the rebuilding of Vermont as it happened. In this collaboration between the Rutland Herald, the Times Argus and Shire Press, Daley and others recreate the spirit of resilience and creativity that Vermonters exhibited in the wake of such overwhelming disaster and celebrates those who lost their lives in the storm.

Daley wrote, “From Wilmington to Waterbury, the Deerfield River to Lake Champlain, the storm transformed Vermont. And in the following months, Vermonters themselves.”

Daley will read several pieces from the book at Bartleby's and talk about the powerful stories of loss and resiliency that she encountered as she traveled the state. Copies of A MIGHTY STORM will be for sale, with proceeds earmarked for special funds for local residents and businesses that suffered losses from Irene.

Stop by Bartleby's to meet Yvonne and discuss your experiences if you'd like. There will still be time to get a bite to eat before heading to the candle light service of remembrance at 7:30pm.

Nichole Bernier Reads from Her New Novel, THE UNFINISHED WORK OF ELIZABETH D.

08/24/2012 6:00 pm

Nichole BernierFriday, August 24th at 6pm Bartleby’s Books hosts Nichole Bernier for an evening reading and discussion of her new novel, THE UNFINISHED WORK OF ELIZABETH D.

Bernier’s dazzling debut is a thoughtful exploration of the struggle ofr identity women face as they become wives and mothers.  When Elizabeth Martin dies suddenly, leaving behind a legacy of private diaries, her best friend realizes she didn’t know her confidante as well as the thought – including where Elizabeth was really going when she died.  Set the anxious summer after September 11th, this story a women’s friendship considers the fine line between privacy and deception and the measures one woman took to protect her sense of self.

Nearly a year after Kate lost Elizabeth in a tragic accident, fear and anxiety have filled the cracks of her daily life.  Kate stays at home with her two children, her career as a pastry chef on the back burner, and hoards emergency supplies in the back of her SUV while masking her distress from her often-absent husband.

Summer vacation on Great Rock Island should have been a restorative time, but Kate’s problems accompany her in the form of Elizabeth’s diaries – decades of musings and secrets locked tight in a trunk she willed to Kate, not to her own husband.  Armed with only one direction –“Start at the beginning”- Kate begins reading, but finds the journals reveal a woman far different than the cheerful wife and mother Kate thought she knew.  When a mysterious man’s name leads Kate to discover the truth behind Elizabeth’s death, she is challenged to rethink her own choices and the personal legacy she would want to leave behind.

Bernier’s deft touch brings to life this poignant exploration of women’s friendship.  Examining the age-old arts of sacrifice and secrecy in the modern era of competitive mothering, the book sheds light on the vast differences between our private lives and public persona.  Richly imagined and brilliantly executed, THE UNFINISHED WORK OF ELIAZABETH D. is a welcome addition to the “educated women’s lit” canon, in the tradition of J. Courtney Sullivan and Dani Shapiro.

Nichole Bernier is a writer for magazines including Elle, SELF, Health, and Boston Magazine, and a longtime contributing editor with Conde Nast Traveler, where she was previously on staff as a columnist, golf and ski editor, and television spokesperson.  She is a founder of the literary website BeyondTheMargins.com, and lives outside Boston with her husband and five children.

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Nichole Bernier at Bartleby’s Books.  The event is free and open to the public.  Bartleby’s Books is located at 17 West Main Street right in the heart of downtown Wilmington, VT.  For questions or to reserve a copy of the book call 802-464-5425, email bartbook@sover.net, or visit Bartleby’s online at myvermontbookstore.com.

VERMONT WILD Author to Sign Books for Father's Day

06/09/2012 1:00 pm

VERMONT WILD author Megan Price will share behind the scenes stories of her hilarious best selling books and autograph copies for shoppers seeking a special Father’s Day gift, Saturday, June 9th, from 1 to 3 pm right here at Bartleby’s Books.

A long-time journalist and former state legislator, Price’s VERMONT WILD Volume One and Two rocketed to the top of the best seller list at independent bookstores throughout the state, two years running. The true wacky warden adventures are a hit with readers aged 9 to 99.

Volume One recounts the misadventures of retired warden Eric Nuse of Johnson as he wrestles with lovesick moose, rioting raccoons, wily poachers and designs a near disastrous dynamite blast. Volume Two includes a few more of Nuse’s tales and introduces readers to more veteran wardens. Stories here include tricking a trapper, barbed wire blunders, a dog named Satan and a dozen more true Vermont stories that have become instant classics.

“Teachers read VERMONT WILD out loud in schools to encourage reading. Hunters take the books to hunting camp. I’ve been told nursing homes use the stories to spur individuals’ memories of their own outdoor adventures,” Price said. “People of all ages and backgrounds love the stories and illustrations. ”

On a more serious note, Price adds, “These wardens are unsung heroes. Without their years of hard work and dedication, we would not have the wildlife we all enjoy today. “

As a special benefit to the Wilmington area, Price has donated two sets of both volumes, each signed by all of the wardens profiled within the books. Bartleby's is holding a raffle in which two winners will be chosen each of whom will receive a set. Raffle tickets are available at Bartleby's for $5. All proceeds benefit the Rebuild Dots fund.

VERMONT WILD has been featured on Vermont Public Radio, has twice earned a mention on Publisher’s Weekly website and has sold thousands of copies. Published in paperback by Pine Marten Press, the books feature a water resistant cover to encourage readers to stuff the books into a backpack and read the stories in the woods. Each volume sells for $19.95. For questions or to reserve your copy and have the author sign and dedicate the book in time for Father’s Day, call us at 802-464-5425, email bartbook@sover.net, or visit myvermontbookstore.com.

Local Author, Linda Donaghue, Reads and Discusses Her New Novel, RESURRECTION

06/02/2012 12:04 pm

“In all its incarnations, Lowell has maintained some
institutional dignity, a hierarchy of success, and a niche for the failed, a
little grand, a little shabby, and sometimes unbearably sad.”

So begins Linda Donaghue’s new novel, RUSURRECTION, a
bittersweet love song inspired by her childhood hometown, Lowell, MA, and
dedicated to her father, Jimmy Donaghue.

For a retired detective an unsolved case suddenly thrust in
the present threatens to become the legacy of his career. For his daughter,
Police Sergeant Mary Elizabeth Muldoon, the same case may be her last. An
informer and recovering drug addict is found dead twenty years after the brutal
slaying of a young man who moved in the same circles as the victim. Mary
Elizabeth will begin to unravel long dormant clues that will awaken the
histories of the dead but also the guilty who will go to any lengths to keep
the case unsolved. As she and her partner are entangled to degrees that
jeopardize their friendships, lives and careers, Mary Elizabeth struggles with
her personal demons and public failings. And the bodies begin to pile up. Set
in Lowell, Massachusetts, the city is a character by itself: shadowy and
powerful, degraded and rehabilitated, a sort of cultural Phoenix with a past
that represents all the greatness and grime of an immigrant city on the cusp of
reinventing itself or continuing a sad decline, not unlike Mary Elizabeth
herself.

Donaghue has been living in rural Vermont for a number
of  years.  Many Valley residents recognize Donaghue as a
contributor to the Deer field Valley News which often features pieces Donaghue
writes about local history and denizens.
She is also the author of A GOODLY HERITAGE, a collection of stories
about Whitingham residents.
Nonetheless, as a native of Lowell, Donaghue has never forgotten her
experiences of growing up there.  Lowell
and its' stories, its' hardscrabble neighborhoods, its' strong, funny,
pragmatic, loving, and sometimes lost characters have never left her. The colleges,
the churches, the auditorium, the majestic city hall, the Merrimack River
itself, Lowell is steeped in the histories of one ethnic group after another,
one grand plan after another all hoping for the same thing: a future that is
prosperous or safe or just better.

Join the author and the staff of Bartleby’s on
Saturday, June 2nd at 4pm for an afternoon of reading and conversation – the
event is free and open to the public.

JON KATZ VISITS WILMINGTON FOR A FLOOD RELIEF FUNDRAISER!

11/03/2011 6:00 pm

Bartleby’s Books in Wilmington is pleased to host New York
Times bestselling author, Jon Katz, for a reading and discussion of his newest
book, Going Home: Finding Peace When Pets Die.
Katz’s work focuses on subjects near to the hearts of many here in
Vermont: dogs, farm animals and rural life. “I had dogs for much of my life,”
he says of his writing career, “but until a troubled border collie landed in my
life in New Jersey in 2001, I never gave them much thought. Since then, much of
my life has changed, and radically.” In fact, Katz has, since that time,
written ten books about dogs, farm animals and rural life, becoming one of the
country’s most respected and quoted writers about dogs and companion
animals.  In his latest book Going Home:
Finding Peace When Pets Die, Katz tackles a subject he says comes up time and
again when visiting with pet owners at readings and book signings all over the
country.  Grieving the loss of a
well-loved animal impacts the lives of many, often with surprising force.

Katz has written seven works of fiction and 13 works of
non-fiction. His work has appeared in The New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stone,
Wired, The Bark, Family Dog Magazine, New York Magazine, and the AKC Gazette.
He wrote about dogs and rural life for the online magazine Slate.com and was a
co-host of Northeast Public Radio’s monthly broadcast “Dog Talk.” His books on
dogs include A Dog Year, The New Work of Dogs, The Dogs of Bedlam Farm, Katz on
Dogs, A Good Dog, Dog Days, Izzy & Lenore, Soul of a Dog and the novel Rose
in a Storm.  He also released this year
Meet the Dogs of Bedlam Farm, the first of three Bedlam Farm children’s pictures
books.  HBO’s film adaptation of A Dog
Year, staring Jeff Bridges (playing Katz), aired in September 2009.

Katz loves living with and writing about dogs, donkeys,
sheep, and cats, and especially loves learning to manage his raucous farm with
his wife. “I am not a real farmer. My crop is stories, not alfalfa, but I have
to manage this place, and I love it dearly and plan to live and write here
until they drag me away. No writer could ask for more material than a farm
provides every single day. And it is a perfect environment to train and work
with my dogs and the other animals here.

Come meet Jon and discuss his new book on Thursday, November
3 at 6pm.  Bartleby’s Books’ Main Street
location in Wilmington is closed for renovations due to flooding from Tropical
Storm Irene.  The event will be held in
the Deerfield Valley Elementary School Library located at 360 VT Rt. 100 North
in Wilmington, VT.   Katz is touring
Vermont as a flood relief fundraiser.
Donations will be accepted at the door and a portion of proceeds from
books sales benefit the Wilmington Flood Relief Fund. For questions or to
reserve a signed copy of the book please email bartbook@sover.net or visit us
online at www.myvermontbookstore.com.
