Book Cellar Fire

in

To our customers and friends,

The building that The Book Cellar is in suffered a catastrophic fire last Sunday night.  Miraculously, all of the building's sixty or so residents made it out unharmed.  The contents of the building and the bookstore were not as lucky.  The building is completely closed while determinations are made regarding rebuilding and the clean up.  All of The Book Cellar's books were lost to water damage.  We are closed indefinitely and will keep you posted on future plans as soon we know what those are.

On a positive note The Book Cellar had signed on a huge event with Rick Riordan, author of the incredibly popular Percy Jackson series, who is on tour promoting the second book in his new series, The Kane Chronicles.  We have decided to continue with this event, which will take place at the River Garden on Friday, May 6 during Gallery Walk.  More information on this event to come in the next day or so.

My thanks to the incredible Book Cellar and Bartleby's staff, the bookselling community, firefighters, friends and strangers who have reached out to us in this sad time.  Many thanks to Ana McDaniel, the Book Cellar's manager, who handled the bulk of the details post-fire, while I was out of the country on vacation.

Customers may continue to purchase books from our website and we will ship them from Bartleby's in Wilmington.  eBooks may be purchased as well.

Thank you for your support during this time.

Share your stories about Irene

in

Would you like to share some of your stories about the flood?  Bartleby's Books is teaming up with Robin White of Starting Over Strong Vermont to provide an opportunity for people to share their experiences inside and outside of a story circle.

Starting Sunday July 22nd at 3 pm Robin has booked Memorial Hall for a traditional Story Circle dedicated to the downtown business owners. But we also felt drawn to offer an individual approach allowing you to share your story 1:1, instead of writing it down.  If you would like share some stories that might be included in a book documenting the flood, please respond to Stevie Cunningham-Darrah to set up an appointment.  Stevie and Robin will be setting up appointments for the afternoons of July 24 and 25th between the hours of 3pm and 7pm.  if you think you have a story you'd like to share, please make an appointment.  Stories can be about anything related to the flood: what happened that day, something you worked on after the flood, how someone helped you, how you helped someone else, anything you'd like to share.  In both cases; we'll ask your permission to tape your story for us to possibly use in the book.

Stevie works for Bartleby's and is working on the book, and Robin works for Starting Over Strong Vermont and is available for counseling this summer.  RSVP to floodbook@myvermontbookstore.com or call 464-5425 if you'd like to set up an appt and ask for Stevie.

Jon Katz event was a great success!

in

Thanks to those who attended our event with Jon Katz last night.  It was a great night.  Jon was wonderful, engaging and inspiring.  Thanks to discussions with Jon, look forward to more VIDEO from Bartleby's.  We plan to use more video to show you how our progress is coming here in Wilmington and at Barlteby's.  We are pushing hard for a Thanksgiving weekend opening and we're going to chronicle the progress for you.  Thanks Jon!

We have signed copies available of most of Jon's books, including his latest outlined below.  If you order online and would like a signed copy, please include that in the comments field.

See you in the store soon!  Lisa

Thank you Bartleby's customers!

What a great weekend at Bartleby's!  It was great to be open again, if only for the weekend and with our limited inventory.  Our customers, friends and neighbors were so supportive.  We can't wait until we open fully in November.

Also, many thanks to my children, Ally and Zach, and their friends Julia, Noura, Ella, Jillian and James for running the best darn lemonade stand ever.  The kids raised $661 for the Wilmington VT Flood Relief Fund.  Thanks for supporting their efforts.

Thanks to Bartleby's staff for volunteering their time and energy this weekend and thanks to Pamela, Dawno and Khaled for bringing the extra energy from Rhode Island.  Thanks to Phil for getting the store to a place where we could host this sale.

This weekend really lifted our spirits!

Thanks to all,

Lisa

Flooding from Irene shuts down Bartleby's

in

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post about the flooding in Wilmington.  Bartleby's is currently closed (as is the whole of downtown Wilmington) due to devastating flooding.  We have lost the majority of our inventory as well as all of our shelving and we'll require extensive renovations, but the building is sound and we are one of the more fortunate sites in the village.  Some buildings washed away down river and others have been condemned.  The incredible strength and support that we have experienced over the last few days has been the lifeline we've needed.  Friends and neighbors have come together to help our community.  The downtown businesses are getting cleaned up more quickly with so much volunteer help.

Bartleby's will reopen and we will do whatever we can to help other businesses and individuals affected.   We are blessed to live and work in this community.  Wilmington will be put back together!

We will post updates as we have them.  Thank you for your support.

Thanks and see you tonight!

Rick Riordan Book Signing Party is ON!

The Book Cellar may be down due to fire, but our commitment to readers is still strong. Along those lines, we are continuing with the RICK RIORDAN event on Friday, May 6th at River Garden during Gallery Walk. For details, visit www.bookcellarvt.com or call Bartleby's Books at 802-464-5425. If you can't make the event, contact us to order a signed copy. We ship anywhere in the US.  More details below.

RICK RIORDAN, AUTHOR OF THE LIGHTING THIEF, STRIKES BRATTLEBORO!

The Book Cellar is thrilled to bring Rick Riordan, bestselling author of the Percy Jackson series, to Brattleboro for a book signing party for his new book THE KANE CHRONICLES, BOOK TWO: THE THRONE OF FIRE.  Join us during the Friday, May 6th Gallery Walk for a chance to meet Rick and have him sign  books for you.  Our fun-filled party is being held at the River Garden in downtown Brattleboro with doors opening at 4:00.  All are welcome at this free event. Tickets to the signing line are available with the purchase of THE THRONE OF FIRE.

The Book Cellar, a Brattleboro institution for 63 years, did suffer devastating damage during The Brooks House Fire, along with so many other members of our community.  Nonetheless, our spirit remains unbroken, and we can’t wait to share this splendid event with our community.  We know fans of The Book Cellar and Rick Riordan will come out in force.

To obtain your signing line ticket and purchase a copy of THE THRONE OF FIRE, call Bartleby’s Books at 802-464-5425, email us at bartbook@sover.net, or order online 24 hours a day at www.bookcellarvt.com.  Donations in support of residents of The Brooks House Apartments may be made at the door all evening long.
