The Book Cellar, a Brattleboro institution for 63 years, did suffer devastating damage during The Brooks House Fire, along with so many other members of our community. April is Poetry Month

In celebration of Poetry Month, The Book Cellar is holding a Guess the Poet raffle. Here's how it works: come by the store and take a gander at the poem we have featured in our April window display. Guesses may be submitted for multiple poets, but only one submission per poet will be accepted. For example: if you think the mystery poet is Emily Dickinson, you may place her name in the drawing one time. If you think the mystery poet may be Emily Dickinson OR Charles Bukowski, you may enter a submission of each author one time. A winner will be drawn at the end of the day on April 30th. A $10 gift certificate (redeemable at either The Book Cellar or Bartleby's Books) awaits the conquering champion!

The response we have received to our event this coming Sunday (March 27) with Jacques d'Amoise has been phenomenal! Reserved seating is no longer available. However, our doors will remain open to all with or without a reserved seat. At the start of the reading any unclaimed seats will become available, and space for standing-room will be provided.
We look forward to sharing Sunday afternoon with you all!

In 1976, he founded theNational Dance Institute, a nonprofit arts education organization. Part Two of our Book Cellar Poetry Series Back West & Out East

The Book Cellar's Friday Gallery Walk event is the second half of our two-part series, and features three of New England's powerhouse poets - Chard deNiord, Verandah Porche, and Stephen Sandy.
CharddeNiord is the author of four books of poetry, THE DOUBLE TRUTH, being his mostrecent. His book of interviews with senior Americanpoets, SADFRIENDS, DROWNED LOVERS, STAPLED SONGS, is scheduled to appear in theFall of 2011. His poems, interviews and essays have appeared recently in Best of The Pushcart Prize, NewEngland Review, Best American Poetry, Hudson Review, American Poetry Review,Ploughshares, The Southern Review and Salmagundi. He is the co-founder of the NewEngland College MFA Program in Poetry, and an associate professor ofEnglish at Providence College.
Verandah Porche haspublished two books of poems, THE BODY’S SYMMETRY and GLANCING OFF. A new collection, SUDDEN EDEN, spans work fromthe last two decades. During the pastthirty years, she has traveled from her home in rural Vermont, writing with andfor people in grange halls and garages, elementary schools and Elderhostels,nursing homes and daycare centers, mansions and soup kitchens, board rooms andbasements, homes and jails, literacy programs and colleges. In so doing, Ms.Porche has developed a practice called "told poetry" or sharednarratives that enable people who need a writing partner to create, preserveand share personal literature.
StephenSandy studied poetry with Robert Lowell and Archibald MacLeish,earned a PhD from Harvard University, and traveled to Japan on a FulbrightVisiting Lectureship. He is the author of eleven collections of poetry. OVERLOOK is his most recent. Sandy has been honored with fellowships fromthe National Endowment for the Arts, the Vermont Council on the Arts, and theIngram Merrill Foundation, in addition to an award from the American Academy ofArts and Letters. Sandy taught for manyyears at Bennington College.

The Book Cellar Hosts Two Part Poetry Series: Back West and Out East

The Book Cellar is hosting a two part poetryseries entitled BACK WEST AND OUT EAST aimed at exploring contemporary poetryin the United States. Featuring workfrom the heart of Western America as well as that of traditional New England, abroad spectrum of themes will emerge that illustrates notions of regionalismand diversity alongside shared kinship and unity.
Week one in the series focuses on the West andintroduces author Frances McCue. Shewill be reading from her new collection of poetry, THE BLED, and also from herprose collection, THE CAR THAT BROUGHT YOU HERE STILL RUNS.
Part travelogue, part memoir, part literaryscholarship, THE CAR THAT BROUGHT YOU HERE STILL RUNS traces the journey ofFrances McCue and photographer Mary Randlett as they follow the path of iconicWestern poet Richard Hugo through the towns that inspired many of Hugo’s poems.Returning forty years after Hugo visited these places, and bringing with her adeep knowledge of Hugo and her own poetic sensibility, McCue maps Hugo's poemsback onto the places that triggered them. Together with twenty-three poems byHugo, McCue's essays and Randlett's photographs offer a fresh view of Hugo'sNorthwest.
"Even though the essays are about smalltowns in Idaho, Washington and Montana, the book has a reference to the Mole’sEye, a bar in Brattleboro that I’ve always loved," McCue says. "It’sa road trip book and one of my earliest road trips was hitchhiking up I-91 toVermont and ending up in the Mole’s Eye."
THE BLED is a different kind of book -- acollection of poems about McCue’s husband, who died in Morocco. McCue and herhusband and daughter were living in Marrakesh while she worked as a FulbrightSenior Scholar.
McCue serves as the writer-in-residence andlecturer at the University of Washington’s Undergraduate Honors Program. Shewas the founding director of Richard Hugo House, one of the nation’s biggestliterary centers, from 1996 to 2006. She has been a Fulbright Senior Scholar,an Echoing Green Fellow, and a Klingenstein Fellow.
The first reading in this series is scheduledfor Friday, February 25 at 6pm. Thesecond reading featuring prominent New England poets, Chard DeNiord, Verandah Porche,and Stephen Sandy (further details to come) will take place during the March 4thGallery Walk at 6pm. Both events arelocated at The Book Cellar at 120 Main Street in downtown Brattleboro, VT. As always, events at The Book Cellar are freeof charge. Seating is limited.
