Ski Diva Mystery Author Wendy Clinch to sign at Bartleby’s Books
Wendy Clinch, creator of the website, theskidiva.com, and author of the Ski Diva mysteries, comes to the Mount Snow area for an in-store event at Bartleby's Books. Wendy will be promoting her second book in the series, Fade to White, answering any questions readers have about the books. Wendy spent 25 years in the advertising industry before moving to Vermont, launching her blog and writing her first mystery, which was published last year. The ski diva mysteries are set in Vermont.
About the mysteries:
In DOUBLE BLACK, Boston’s twenty-something Stacey Curtis ditches her cheating fiance and heads for a Vermont ski town. Breaking Night

I've been meaning to write something about this book for over a week and I think I've been putting it off because I'm not sure I even know what to say. Liz Murray's memoir is both heartbreaking and inspiring. Growing up in the Bronx to drug-addicted parents and ending up homeless as a teenager, Liz finds the strength and determination to finish high school and ultimately attend Harvard. I had the opportunity to meet Liz at the New England Independent Booksellers fall conference last month and learned about her story there. Even more amazing than her incredible story is her commitment to helping other children who are growing up without enough food.
Liz has said that the school lunch program was sometimes her only meal of the day. Without school on the weekends, some children are left without enough to eat on the weekends. As part of her book tour, LIz partnered with Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that sends children in need home with a backpack of food on Fridays. Liz hopes that through her campaign 50,000 children will be served through the program by the end of the year. Because of partnerships with local grocers Blessings in a Backpack is able to provide a school year of food for $80 per child. Celebrate the VT Life Wine & Harvest Festival @ Bartleby's Books!

Bartleby's is THE place to be this year on the downtown Friday (9/24) of the 3rd Annual Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival. Come join the party from 5:30-7:30pm!
The store will host a trio of Vermont food writers that includes Putney resident and James Beard award winner Deborah Krasner, Consider Bardwell farm owner, literary agent, and author Angela Miller, and Hollywood insider turned VT master baker Gesine Bullock-Prado. We'll also have wine and soup tastings in the store and Vermont Life Magazine will be here handing out free issues.

Favorites from Candlewick Press

There are some great new kids titles this fall from Candlewick. A few of my favorites are listed below. I really can't get enough of Bonny Becker's Bear series (remember A Visitor for Bear and Bedtime for Bear?). The latest: Bedtime for Bear, is so sweet and funny. If you haven't checked out this series yet, be sure to take a peek. Another fun choice this fall is Brontorina by James Howe and illustrated by Randy Cecil.
A can't miss for early readers is the brand new Bink and Gollie from the powerhouse team Kate DiCamillo, Alison McGhee and Tony Fucile. What a collaboration! Hilarious and great fun!
What I've been reading a whole lot of lately is young adult fiction and besides the Hunger Games trilogy, which is obviously fantastic, I think the best of the best is the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. Set in a world where men can all hear each other's thoughts (lots of NOISE) and there are no women (at first), the series is a great example of dystopian fiction that addresses good vs. evil, civil war, decisions that change us, and of course, a little bit of romance. The third book in the trilogy comes out at the end of September. All titles are listed below. Happy Reading! Lisa

Lives of Visionary New Englanders with Author John Walters @ Book Cellar on 9/16

Thursday, September 16th at 7pm John Walters will be at The Book
Cellar reading and signing his new book, Roads Less Traveled: Visionary New
England Lives. The book tells the stories of some truly remarkable people
who have led lives of passion and purpose, devoting themselves to a career, an
art form, an idea, or a cause.
All of the people featured in Roads Less
Traveled are residents of Vermont and New Hampshire and the list includes local
visionaries Will Ackerman, a Grammy-winning guitarist and producer and the founder
of Windham Hill Music, as well as Scott Nehring, a Townshend furniture maker
who crafts each piece from the wood of a single tree and makes everything fit
flawlessly together without metal joinery or adhesives. In the telling of their
stories and others Walters has compiled a testament to the breadth of human
creativity and the strength of the human spirit.

Lost Ski Areas of Southern Vermont: Jeremy Davis @ Bartleby's on 8/28

Calling all Vermont history buffs!
Hidden amongst the hills and mountains of Southern Vermont
are the remnants of sixty former ski areas, their slopes returning to forest
and their lifts decaying. Today, only fourteen remain open and active. Though
they offer some incredible skiing, most lack the intimate, local feel of these
lost ski trails.
Jeremy Davis, creator of the New England Lost Ski Areas
Project, looks into the over-investment, local competition, weather variation,
changing skier habits, insurance costs and just plain bad luck that caused
these ski areas to succumb and melt back into the landscape. From the
family-operated Hogback here in Windham County to Clinton Gilbert’s farm in
Woodstock, where the very first rope tow began operation in the winter of 1934,
these once popular ski areas have left an indelible trace on the hearts of
their ski communities and the history of Southern Vermont.
The book features never before published photographs, maps,
and memories of former Southern Vermont ski areas, and also contains
information on the remaining small, community-type ski areas that still operate
in the region.

Madcap Adventures with Novelist Matthew Dicks @ The Book Cellar on 8/19

Matthew Dicks is a funny guy. He's created a genre for himself as the go-to guy for the loveable-loser brand of neurotic humor: a mix between the immensely popular TV show Monk and Woody Allen with a dash of Nick Hornby. We met him a few years ago at a New England Independent Booksellers function and we are very excited to have him at The Book Cellar on Thursday, August 19th at 7pm, reading and signing his new book Unexpectedly, Milo. The only book we've heard of where the protagonist struggles with the compulsion to sing "99 Luftballons", the German version, at karaoke bars, and open Smucker's jelly jars for the satisfying pop.

Marlboro College professor Laura Stevenson and her husband, poet and novelist Franklin Reeve will be signing copies of their latest books at Bartleby's during the Old Home Week Stroll on Friday, August 13th from 4 to 6pm. Franklin will also be reading a poem at the community banquet and the house featured on the cover of Laura's book, Return in Kind, will be part of the Old Home Week home tour. Come on out to celebrate your friends and neighbors!
