JON KATZ VISITS WILMINGTON FOR A FLOOD RELIEF FUNDRAISER!
Bartleby’s Books in Wilmington is pleased to host New York
Times bestselling author, Jon Katz, for a reading and discussion of his newest
book, Going Home: Finding Peace When Pets Die.
Katz’s work focuses on subjects near to the hearts of many here in
Vermont: dogs, farm animals and rural life. “I had dogs for much of my life,”
he says of his writing career, “but until a troubled border collie landed in my
life in New Jersey in 2001, I never gave them much thought. Since then, much of
my life has changed, and radically.” In fact, Katz has, since that time,
written ten books about dogs, farm animals and rural life, becoming one of the
country’s most respected and quoted writers about dogs and companion
animals. In his latest book Going Home:
Finding Peace When Pets Die, Katz tackles a subject he says comes up time and
again when visiting with pet owners at readings and book signings all over the
country. Grieving the loss of a
well-loved animal impacts the lives of many, often with surprising force.
Katz has written seven works of fiction and 13 works of
non-fiction. His work has appeared in The New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stone,
Wired, The Bark, Family Dog Magazine, New York Magazine, and the AKC Gazette.
He wrote about dogs and rural life for the online magazine Slate.com and was a
co-host of Northeast Public Radio’s monthly broadcast “Dog Talk.” His books on
dogs include A Dog Year, The New Work of Dogs, The Dogs of Bedlam Farm, Katz on
Dogs, A Good Dog, Dog Days, Izzy & Lenore, Soul of a Dog and the novel Rose
in a Storm. He also released this year
Meet the Dogs of Bedlam Farm, the first of three Bedlam Farm children’s pictures
books. HBO’s film adaptation of A Dog
Year, staring Jeff Bridges (playing Katz), aired in September 2009.
Katz loves living with and writing about dogs, donkeys,
sheep, and cats, and especially loves learning to manage his raucous farm with
his wife. “I am not a real farmer. My crop is stories, not alfalfa, but I have
to manage this place, and I love it dearly and plan to live and write here
until they drag me away. No writer could ask for more material than a farm
provides every single day. And it is a perfect environment to train and work
with my dogs and the other animals here.
Come meet Jon and discuss his new book on Thursday, November
3 at 6pm. Bartleby’s Books’ Main Street
location in Wilmington is closed for renovations due to flooding from Tropical
Storm Irene. The event will be held in
the Deerfield Valley Elementary School Library located at 360 VT Rt. 100 North
in Wilmington, VT. Katz is touring
Vermont as a flood relief fundraiser.
Donations will be accepted at the door and a portion of proceeds from
books sales benefit the Wilmington Flood Relief Fund. For questions or to
